I came across this 1948 instructional film “What is Cloth” made by Coronet Films , in collaboration with the University of Illinois, while doing some research on American textiles. It is a must watch for any educator, sewist or textile artist. Some of the education on cloth has expanded and improved over the years since this video was made, but the basics still ring true today. It’s too sad we don’t teach home economics in all our schools today. Traditions and basic life skill knowledge are being lost. But thanks to youtube we can still seek them out. And besides, don’t you love learning about retro textiles history. I loved reading the Coronet Magazine too! Yes, I’m that old! LOL. By the by, dig the plastic apron Mom is wearing!
